Nothing says “obsession” like your own museum

Check out this guy’s home Mac museum:

Mac Museum
Soyburger’s Mac Museum

Not only does he have one of just about every Macintosh ever made, but he has some Apple IIs and Newtons as well. I seriously doubt if he has a Bandai Pippin and he apparently doesn’t have a Lisa, but what an amazing collection. Click the link above or this link to go to the Flickr collection of pics.

New flavors for iPod shuffle

January 30, 2007 · Filed Under Apple, MobileMedia, Opinion · 2 Comments

The diminutive iPod shuffle has been a hit since it started selling last year, so why would Apple want to change it? To sell more, of course! They’ve added four new colors (pink, green, blue and orange) to the mix, with silver staying in the line as the mainstay.

Color Shuffle

This is good news for my wife, who likes her shuffle so much that she said she wanted “more” so she could fill each one up with different types of music. They’re available now from Apple, so be sure to pop on down to your local Apple store to pick up a spectrum of sound.

Binary Hat

Binary Hat

My sister Susan is a knitting fanatic as well as a fan of Apple, so when she told me she was making me a binary hat my first thought was “huh?” But then she explained that it’s a knitted cap that features a pattern that is ASCII code that has been converted to binary, then knitted with one color representing a zero and another color representing a one.

So, can you guess what this hat “says”? Here are a few hints:
- Read from bottom to top
- The ribbing and first 6 rows of blue don’t count
- The first 3 digits (green green blue) represent a checksum
- The last 3 digits (blue green green) are also a checksum

And click on this picture to get a very large image of this so you can decode the hat.

You’ll have to register to leave a comment - you can do that by hitting the “Register” link on the right side of the page. The first person other than my sister, brother-in-law or nephew who figures this out gets a free “CellMate” pad to keep your favorite gizmo from sliding on your car dashboard.

UPDATE: My sister has added in a skein of yarn to the first person who can decode the “message” in the hat.

Rant - The Inconsistency and Stupidity of (some) Humans

January 24, 2007 · Filed Under Computers, Opinion · Comment

Sometimes I’m asked why I love electronic devices. For the most part, my lust for all things that are gadgets springs from my childhood in the 60’s, when many of the things that we take for granted today were strictly in the realm of science fiction. But another big reason I love gizmos is that for the most part they are very consistent.

Take, for example, my iPod nano. Whatever I do to it, no matter how much music I load into it or how many pictures I shove into it, it works. I turn it on, and it responds in a positive manner to my commands. If it is out of power, it just won’t turn on. I accept that and chide myself for not having charged it up earlier. My Macs are very consistent. The MacBook I’m using here in the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company “store” in the Sacramento airport works very well all the time. I rarely, if ever, turn it off. I just put it to sleep when I’m not using it, and it happily chews my text, pictures, podcasts and other garbage with no complaints. Nice. (Read more by clicking Read On…)

La Quinta Internet - Thumbs Up

January 24, 2007 · Filed Under Opinion · Comment

I’m on another business trip right now, and you know from my previous posts that public access internet services (wired or wireless) are one of my pet peeves. I really hate it when a hotel like the Renaissance Parc 55 in San Francisco charges $10 a day for access, then basically locks just about every port completely shut so I can’t get any work done.

That’s why I like to make a point of congratulating companies or organizations that do “good internet”. My hero of the day is La Quinta Inns and Suites. I was at their hotel the last two days here in Sacramento, and was pleased to find that not only did they have free WiFi, but you can request a “Private Internet Address” - basically an IP address with all ports open.

I needed this to do some ftp uploads and was pleased to find that the service worked just fine. So a pat on the back and two thumbs up for La Quinta Inns and Suites!

Here’s #1:

Macworld Wrapup

January 14, 2007 · Filed Under Apple, Hardware, MobileMedia, Opinion · Comment

I returned from Macworld Expo on Thursday evening. I have to admit that this year’s event was just a tad disappointing, primarily because there was very little “take away” material in terms of new hardware and software.

Since the announcement of the iPhone, however, things have been amazingly silly in the world of mobile devices. The Mobius group that I’m part of has been raking the iPhone over the coals for its lack of a keyboard as well as the general fact that Apple makes it. There was an online article I saw with a criticism of the iPhone because it contains the same FairPlay digital rights management scheme that the iPod does. A couple of vendors are actually starting to show cases for the iPhone. All of this is for a piece of plastic, metal and silicon that won’t see the light of day for another five months. Sigh. At least we’ll see AppleTV next month.
