PC Mag’s Take on the iPhone
PC Magazine’s Jamie Lendino provided a very well-done analysis of the iPhone versus other smart devices in an online article yesterday. In “Pre-Game Analysis: The iPhone vs. Real Smartphones“, Lendino provides a listing of the pros and cons of the iPhone 1.0. Here’s a summary:
[TABLE=1]
The iPhone, just on a hands-off comparison, edges out the “real smartphones” slightly with 5 wins and 1 tie over 4 wins for the “real deal”. But I don’t think Lendino gets it. He/She (Jamie is one of those unisex names, sorry…) is comparing the best of breed for the WM, Palm and BlackBerry smartphones to the iPhone, so it’s like comparing the best feature of 10 different smartphones to the iPhone! He/She is talking about the Moto Q and Samsung BlackJack in comparison to iPhone in one area, then the LG VX9400 in another. The Archos 604 portable media player even gets thrown into the mix in one comparison.
My personal take is that the iPhone score will probably rise a bit when the device actually comes out. And now we’re only six days away…
The Beast Asks: Where are you getting YOUR iPhone?
With a little over a week to go until the iPhone hits the market, it’s getting fun to hear how people are going to try to get one of the first available devices. My personal plan was going to be to get to my local AT&T Store at 7 AM next Friday, but now I’m thinking it would be a lot more fun to camp out at one of the two nearby Apple Stores instead. It’s fascinating to see how close-mouthed all the Apple employees are about this device. At an Apple Consultants Network meeting here in Denver last night, an Apple Enterprise guy who definitely knows what’s going on sat back and just grinned whenever we’d send a question about the iPhone his way. Allegedly, the Apple Stores will begin clearing space for the iPhone display and sales are beginning this Thursday. Frankly, I don’t think that will happen since the last thing you need in an Apple Store is unproductive square footage!
So how are you going to get your iPhone? Are you going to wait in line at an Apple Store, hang out at an AT&T Store, or order one online? Leave your comment below (registration required).

Hi - it’s time (about damned time, if I say so myself) for another episode of Movable Beast Radio. In this episode, I talk about the state of mobile phone and WiFi coverage for travelers, and how things have progressed over the years. I also chat a bit about the iPhone, which I will be camping out for on June 29th!

HTC Touch vs. iPhone
It was an absolute given that as soon as Apple announced the iPhone, someone was going to try to take a Windows Mobile device and try to turn it into an iPhone-wannabe. And that someone was Windows Mobile powerhouse HTC, with the Touch. It was good to see that Matt Miller made a great video showing how lame the Touch interface is compared to the iPhone:
Where In The World Is Steve Sande?
Yup, campers - I’ve been in Europe for the past, uhhhhh, 8 days or so. My wife, 92 year old father in law, and I are on the Disney Magic cruising the Mediterranean. And of course I’ve got a ton of news to report…a few days late. So hopefully you’ve been out camping or have been under heavy anesthesia for the last week so this will all seem new to you. Another iPhone in the wild
This sighting is from GeekNUZ - the author saw one at a restaurant “somewhere in Silicon Valley” and passed along his commentary that he was hoping the iPhone would support 3rd-party apps. We can only hope that someone listens…

Review: Test Driving the Sprint Moto Q

First, let me get one thing off my chest… Sprint, could you please shorten the name of your devices a bit? This review is about the Sprint Mobile Broadband Smart Device MOTO QTM by Motorola
First Impressions: Palm Treo 680
Yep, you heard that right. A Palm Treo 680. You know, after all of those nasty comments I’ve been making about Palm’s lack of focus in the mobile computing space, how they’re going to get sucked into some other company, etc… Well, I am working on a software project that required that I get a Palm OS (or shall we say Access Powered) device, so I thought I’d pick up an unlocked Treo 680 (see below). Here are my thoughts about this device.

Those of us who are M
HTC Advantage and Shift
I love it when device manufacturers actually use some imagination in naming their devices rather than giving them numbers. HTC just announced two new devices that further blur the distinction between “smart devices” like smartphones and full laptop computers.
The HTC Advantage (below) is a Windows Mobile 6 device with a keyboard that connects to the PDA body magnetically, a 5 inch VGA screen, and every type of connectivity you could possibly want - GSM/DPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA/Bluetooth 2.0/WiFi. It also has an 8 GB hard drive, 256 MB of ROM, 128 MB of RAM and a miniSD slot.
And now for something completely different - the HTC Shift. It looks like the Advantage but is slightly larger, with a 7 inch screen. What’s pretty cool is that it runs Windows Vista Business and apparently even supports Aero Glass (note the photo below). It has the same connectivity goods as the Advantage, plus a 30 GB hard disk. I’d love it if Apple would come out with an iPhone device like this (without having to run it on AT&T, by the way…).
You should start seeing these devices in the US and Europe in Q3 2007. Want to see the full press release from HTC? Click the link below to continue reading.
